Management Team
Peter J. Ungaro
CEO and President
Peter Ungaro serves as Chief Executive Officer and President. Prior to his appointment as President in March 2005, and CEO in August 2005, Mr. Ungaro served as Senior Vice President responsible for sales, marketing and service. In this role Mr. Ungaro was responsible for creating and implementing Cray's worldwide sales and marketing strategy, expanding opportunities for current and future Cray products, collaborating closely with product development and other technical leaders, enhancing the capabilities of Cray's global sales force, and leading service and support for Cray's customers around the world. Prior to joining Cray in 2003, Mr. Ungaro served as Vice President of Worldwide Deep Computing Sales for IBM. In that role, he led global sales of all IBM server and storage products for high performance computing, life sciences, digital media and business intelligence markets. He coordinated IBM solutions teams that included sales, technical, marketing and product development personnel. Prior to that assignment, he was IBM's Vice President of Sales, Worldwide High Performance Computing. He also held a variety of other sales leadership positions since joining IBM in 1991. Mr. Ungaro received a B.A. from Washington State University.
Barry C. Bolding
Vice President, Scalable Systems
Barry Bolding serves as Vice President and is responsible for the product development, management, benchmarking and applications for Cray’s supercomputer systems. Dr. Bolding originally joined Cray in 1992 and has since served key roles within Cray as well as with other HPC companies including SGI, Network Computing Services and IBM. Prior to his appointment as Vice President responsible for Scalable Systems in early 2009, Dr. Bolding served as Cray’s director of Product Marketing where he was instrumental in analyzing future products and developing long-term strategies. Over the years, Dr. Bolding has worked as a scientist, applications specialist, systems architect, pre-sales and product and market manger as well as with key customers in government, education, pharmaceutical and commercial markets. Bolding holds a B.S. in chemistry from University of California at Davis and a Ph.D. in chemical physics from Stanford University.
Paul C. Ciernia
Vice President, Sales Operations
Paul Ciernia serves as Vice President and is responsible for the company's worldwide sales operations. He has held various positions in Sales Administration and Sales Operations and was appointed Vice President in 2005. Mr. Ciernia began working for Cray Research in 1986 and has been continuously involved in Cray's high performance computing sales and marketing efforts. Prior to joining Cray Research, he was the Database Product Manager at Sperry and also held software support and development positions at Burroughs focused on database technology. Mr. Ciernia received a BA degree in chemistry from the University of Minnesota and a Masters degree in management from the University of Southern California.
Brian C. Henry
Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer
Brian Henry joined Cray in May 2005 as Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer. He has 20 years of experience as a technology company chief financial officer. Henry joined Cray after having served as executive vice president and chief financial officer of Onyx Software Corporation, a full suite customer relationship management company, which he joined in 2001. Mr. Henry previously served from 1999 to 2001 as executive vice president and chief financial officer of Lante Corporation, a public internet consulting company focused on e-markets and collaborative business models. From 1998 to 1999 he was chief operating officer, information management group, of Convergys Corporation, which he helped spin-off from Cincinnati Bell Inc., a diversified service company where he served as executive vice president and chief financial officer from 1993 to 1998. From 1983 to 1993 he was with Mentor Graphics Corporation in key financial management roles, serving as chief financial officer from 1986 to 1993. Mr. Henry received his B.S. degree from Portland State University and an M.B.A. at Harvard University where he was a Baker Scholar.
Jill Y. Hopper
Vice President, Government Programs
Jill Hopper joined Cray in January 2008 as Vice President and is responsible for managing the strategic relationship between Cray and the U.S. Federal Government. With more than 24 years of government affairs experience at the federal level, Ms. Hopper most recently served as the Vice President of Government Relations at SRA International. Prior to that, she served as Director of Government Relations at Battelle, and as the Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Legislative Affairs (1999-2001) for Secretary William S. Cohen. She also worked for the U.S. House of Representatives from 1982-1992 where she staffed several appropriations subcommittees, including the subcommittee on defense, during tenures with Congressman Bernard J. Dwyer and Joseph D. Early. Ms. Hopper has an MBA from the George Washington University where she received the Bryce Harlow Scholarship two years consecutively. She has a BA in economics and psychology from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.
Linda J. Howitson
Vice President, Human Resources
Linda Howitson serves as Vice President and is responsible for worldwide human resources and organizational development. Howitson joined Cray in February 2006, bringing with her more than 20 years of experience in high technology environments for both corporate and field locations. Prior to joining Cray, she served as Vice President of Human Resources at Crane Electronics, a division of Crane Company, and Director of International Human Resources for Intermec Corporation. Ms. Howitson has done extensive work in Performance Management, Organizational Development and Cultural Change/Integration after mergers and acquisitions. Ms. Howitson holds a B.A. in Education and an M.A. in Human Resource Development from Western Michigan University.
Kenneth W. Johnson
Senior Vice President
Kenneth Johnson serves as Senior Vice President. Until October 2009, he served as General Counsel and Corporate Secretary, having held those positions since joining Cray in 1997. From September 1997 to December 2001 he also served as Chief Financial Officer and he resumed the position of Chief Financial Officer from November 2004 to May 2005. Prior to joining Cray, he practiced law in Seattle for twenty years with Stoel Rives LLP and predecessor firms, where his practice emphasized corporate finance. Mr. Johnson received an A.B. degree from Stanford University and a J.D. degree from Columbia University Law School.
Wayne J. Kugel
Senior Vice President, Operations and Customer Support
Wayne Kugel serves as Senior Vice President and is responsible for manufacturing, supply chain, information technology and facilities. Prior to his appointment as Senior Vice President in early 2009, he served for four years as Vice President responsible for operations. Mr. Kugel joined Cray in 2001 and through 2005 served as Program Director for the "Red Storm" program, a joint effort between Cray and Sandia National Laboratories, and its commercial successor, the Cray XT3 supercomputer. Prior to joining Cray, he led the worldwide Enterprise Customer Analytics group for IBM Business Intelligence, working with over 30 Fortune 500 companies to implement prediction algorithms and decision support tools to improve the economics between supply and demand generation. Prior to that, he worked for Carlson Marketing Group in a variety of Information Technology roles, implementing marketing automation and analysis applications. Mr. Kugel received a B.A. in Management Information Systems from University of Wisconsin, Eau Claire.
Ian W. Miller
Senior Vice President, Productivity Solutions Group Sales and Marketing
Ian Miller serves as Senior Vice President and is responsible for worldwide marketing and the Productivity Solutions Group (Cray CX products). From February 2009, when he joined Cray, through January 2009, he was responsible for worldwide sales and marketing. Prior to joining Cray, he served as the Vice President of Polyserve Software at HP and as Vice President of Worldwide Sales for PolyServe prior to its acquisition by HP. Before joining PolyServe, Mr. Miller was Vice President of Worldwide sales for IBM High End xSeries Servers where he worked for both IBM xSeries and pSeries organizations, with a particular focus on marketing and sales for high end Intel based systems. Prior to IBM, he was Vice President of Global Marketing for Sequent Computer Systems, and Vice President Asia Pacific. Mr. Miller has also worked for Software AG as Senior Vice President Asia Pacific, and for Unisys in many capacities, ending as General Manager for Asia South. Mr. Miller is a Graduate of London University.
Charles A. Morreale
Vice President, Custom Engineering
Chuck Morreale serves as Vice President and is responsible for Custom Engineering. From April 2005 through January 2009, he was responsible for central and field services and benchmarking organizations. From March 2004 to April 2005, he served as director of worldwide sales support. Prior to joining Cray in 2004, he was a sales executive at IBM, responsible for worldwide HPC sales activities in the Life Sciences. Previously, Mr. Morreale spent over ten years with Cray Research, Inc. starting as a programmer analyst and eventually as an account manager. He graduated from Trenton State College with a B.A. in Business Administration.
Michael C. Piraino
Vice President, General Counsel and Corporate Secretary
Michael Piraino joined Cray in October 2009 as Vice President, General Counsel and Corporate Secretary. Prior to joining Cray, from October 2007 to September 2009, he served with the Seattle office of the law firm Fenwick & West LLP (and a predecessor firm), where his practice focused on corporate finance and securities. From October 2006 to June 2007, Mr. Piraino served with the Exbiblio family of companies in various positions, including Chief Executive Officer. From May 1999 to October 2006, he served with WatchGuard Technologies, Inc. in various roles, including vice president, general counsel and secretary, and from October 1995 to May 1999 he served with the law firm Perkins Coie LLP. Mr. Piraino began his career as a propulsion engineer at The Boeing Company. He holds a B.S. in aeronautical and astronautical engineering from Purdue University and a J.D., magna cum laude, from the Seattle University School of Law.
Steven L. Scott
Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Officer
Steve Scott serves as Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Officer with responsibility for designing the integrated infrastructure that will drive Cray's next generation of supercomputers. Dr. Scott, who joined Cray in 1992, was formerly the chief architect of the Cray X1 scalable vector supercomputer and was instrumental in the design of the Cray/Sandia Red Storm supercomputer system. Dr. Scott holds 22 US patents in the areas of interconnection networks, cache coherence, synchronization mechanisms, and scalable parallel architectures. He received his Ph.D. in computer architecture from the University of Wisconsin, Madison in 1992, where he was a Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation and Hertz Foundation Fellow. Dr. Scott has served on numerous program committees and as an associate editor for the IEEE Transactions on Parallel and Distributed Systems. He is a noted expert in high performance computer architecture and interconnection networks, and was the recipient of the 2005 ACM Maurice Wilkes Award and the 2005 IEEE Seymour Cray Computer Engineering Award.
Margaret A. (Peg) Williams
Senior Vice President, Research and Development
Peg Williams serves as Senior Vice President and is responsible for Cray's software and hardware engineering efforts for Cray's current supercomputers and research and development projects. Dr. Williams, who has more than 20 years of experience in the HPC industry, joined Cray in May 2005 from IBM, where she was the Vice President of Database Technology. Prior to that, she managed IBM's HPC Software and AIX Development. Her extensive HPC experience also includes leading the user support team at the Maui High Performance Computing Center (MHPCC). Dr. Williams holds a B.S. in math and physics from Ursinus College, a Masters in math and a Ph.D. in applied math from Lehigh University.
