Cray expects to begin shipping its industry-leading Cray XT4 systems with new, ultra-powerful Quad-Core AMD Opteron processors by year-end.  The company has already received significant orders for these enhanced quad-core systems, including orders from the Department of Energy's Oak Ridge National Laboratory, CSC Finland, Engineering Reserch and Development Center for the US Army Corps of Engineers and the UK's Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council for the HECToR national academic service.
 
Scientists Use Powerful Cray Supercomputer to Develop Groundbreaking Strategies in Weather Prediction

In August it was announced that scientists have leveraged the power of a Cray supercomputer at the Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center (PSC) to break new ground in weather prediction.  Researchers from the University of Oklahoma's Center for Analysis and Prediction of Storms (CAPS) and the National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) employed an innovative combination of high resolution and controlled manipulation of numerical model parameters and starting conditions to develop strategies that will allow forecasters to better anticipate the formation of severe storms and the supercells that give birth to destructive tornados.  The research was part of the NOAA Hazardous Weather Testbed (HWT) Spring Experiment.

Cray Supercomputer at Sandia Helps Researchers Discover Origin of Mysterious Glass Found in King Tut's Tomb

Researchers running simulations on the Cray supercomputer at Sandia National Laboratories have recreated what could have happened 29 million years ago when an asteroid explosion turned Saharan sand into glass.  The greenish natural glass, which can still be found scattered across remote stretches of the desert, was used by an artisan in ancient Egypt to carve a scarab that decorates one of the bejeweled breastplates buried in King Tutankahamen's tomb.

In 1994 Cray introduced the first wireless supercomputer, the Cray T90.  It boasted a 1.8 GFLOPS processor, system peak performance of 57.8 GFLOPS, and a whopping 16GB of main memory.  What a classic!
