It’s A Wrap

And another successful SC conference comes to a close. We had a fabulous week at SC13 with a busy booth and even busier briefing rooms. It all started off with a bang on Monday night with the unveiling of our new booth where we served up free Colorado microbrews and celebrated another year of new faces, new products, and new customers. Visitors to our exhibit were met with more racks of computing, storage, and analytics products than ever before. This year, Cray and three of our staff members were recognized in a special silver anniversary ceremony recognizing companies and individuals who have participated in all 25 annual SC conferences. Also in honor of this special anniversary we displayed an historic Cray-1 module and a life-size … [Read more...]

What’s Around the Corner?

It starts with the excitement and anticipation. Then it’s down to business — making lists, counting days, packing and shipping, and maybe just a little bit of stress. No, I’m not talking about getting ready for the holidays. I’m talking about SC13! We’re less than one week away from the biggest event of the year for Cray. The annual supercomputing conference (SC) will kick off on November 17 in Denver, Colorado. SC brings together some of the best minds in the world to both share and hear about our rapidly changing industry. It’s also a week where we celebrate noteworthy achievements — from scientific breakthroughs to new and innovative products that will ultimately turn great ideas into brilliant discoveries. This year marks the 25th … [Read more...]

Cray’s Past Instrumental in Guiding its Future

Cray-1

This past weekend, we used the occasion of Mr. Seymour Cray’s birthday to pay tribute to the visionary who started it all and is affectionately known as the “Father of Supercomputing.”  With a childhood interest in electronics and electrical devices, he began an early quest to create some of the world’s most powerful supercomputers, and there is no doubt he has shaped and influenced today’s HPC industry. As a company, Cray was among the early information technology giants to emerge in the United States and has long striven to provide leadership in the sector. History often shapes the present and guides the future, and this is evident in Cray's direction. Our longstanding place in the HPC sector has given us the experience and expertise … [Read more...]

Cray Clusters Feed Growing Market

Fotosearch_20480530_csh0181

It’s well known that the high performance computing (HPC) market has grown quickly over the last couple of decades. In fact, the HPC market has tripled in size from $3.7 billion in the mid-1990s to $11.1 billion in 2012 according to IDC. But what may surprise some industry observers is the furious growth of cluster supercomputers. In 2003, these systems accounted for only 20 percent of all HPC system revenue; but from 2007 onward, clustered systems have grown to represent roughly 65 percent of total HPC system revenue, according to IDC. In addition, we’re likely to see the demand for cluster supercomputers continue to climb over the coming years as Big Data increases the demand for systems that can handle data-intensive workloads. A … [Read more...]

Computing Models Advancing as Oil and Gas Industry Demands Change

Oil and Gas_2

The oil and gas industry has long been among the leading practitioners of supercomputing technology, as 3D seismic data processing has been a staple of the sector for years. Recent developments in the industry have added additional layers of complexity and opportunity that promise to improve exploration and production operations - Permanent Reservoir Monitoring, or PRM. In the past, the development plan for a newly discovered field was based entirely on the original seismic data, observations made by the discovery and subsequent wells. In the previous two decades, it had been demonstrated at more than twenty producing fields around the world that when 3D seismic surveys were repeated two or three times a year it was possible to detect … [Read more...]
