Recent Workshop Analyzes HPC in the Oil and Gas Industry

A few weeks back, Cray and VBRX (now known as XQUBE) teamed up to a host workshop focused on upstream Oil and Gas applications and the growing demands for High Performance Computing (HPC) technologies in the Oil and Gas industry. With events like this, we often spend a disproportionate amount of time promoting the event itself, rather than providing some insights into what was actually presented, discussed and shared. So, I’m happy to give you my first-hand account.

I’m proud to say, the workshop was a great success and we are pleased to have played a key role in putting it together. Held in beautiful Rio de Janeiro on May 23, the event was well attended and well received.

There were several talks on wide array of topics, such as HPC requirements for seismic processing and emerging big data needs for permanent reservoir monitoring. Those attending the workshop also heard updates on HPC facilities, computing, processors and storage technologies. The audience was interactive and attentive, and included representatives from major oil and gas companies, seismic service companies, Brazilian universities and government organizations. Attendees worked in various departments areas such as R&D, operations, technology and management.

Phil Bording, of Shin’s Geophysical & Research and a professor at the University of Tulsa, provided two insightful and detailed keynote presentations. In the morning he covered current seismic processing approaches such as Reverse Time Migration (RTM) and state-of-the-art Full Waveform Inversion (FWI) algorithms. FWI promises much greater image fidelity and the potential for huge rewards for the oil and gas industry. In the afternoon Dr. Bording spoke about how HPC can act as a catalyst to integrate seismic processing and reservoir simulation teams.

Wulf Massell, Cray’s energy segment manager, presented an introduction to Permanent Reservoir Monitoring (PRM). PRM is a developing area with significant potential and is a good example of a new class of big data problem.

As a transition into the afternoon technology-focused talks, Wander Mendes of the Brazilian Center for Weather Forecasts and Climate Studies (CPTEC) gave an insightful presentation on the implementation of CPTEC’s operational supercomputer facility – from system integration to facilities considerations.    CPTEC is one of Brazil’s largest and most experienced HPC facilities.

The afternoon featured detailed technology updates and best-practices from Alaor Neto on the use of Intel Xeon Phi  in the Oil and Gas industry, Arnaldo Tavares on NVIDIA GPUs in Oil and Gas, Robert Anderson of Xyratex on breaking the I/O bottleneck in storage architecture, and finally, John Romo on Cray computing and storage solutions

It was a great event, and we would like to thank all of the speakers and the attendees for making the workshop a success. We would also like to thank our friends at XQUBE for their hard work and energy in organizing the local arrangements.
