Solving Big Problems

Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) largest multiprogram science and energy laboratory. Its scientific and technical capabilities span basic to applied research and an exceptionally wide range of R&D problems from nuclear physics to advanced energy systems. In service of solving the DOE’s fundamental research challenges, ORNL puts emphasis on combining scientific insights and applied systems to deliver practical solutions to the marketplace. Its discoveries create new industries, provided jobs, and support the DOE’s in ensuring the nation’s security and prosperity.

The Oak Ridge Leadership Computing Facility (OLCF) is Oak Ridge National Laboratory’s supercomputing program. OLCF provides world-class HPC resources and scientific computing expertise to researchers working on the world’s most difficult scientific problems in disciplines from biology to seismology. It helps scientists and engineers deliver practical breakthroughs and new knowledge in climate, materials, nuclear science, and more. This U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science User Facility will be home to Frontier.

Why Exascale Is a New Era

The supercomputing industry has hit major speed and scale milestones before. But exascale is different. It’s different because questions are changing – and so must the workloads tasked with answering them.

Traditional modeling and simulation are converging with artificial intelligence, analytics, and IoT to create single workflows operating at unprecedented scale and in real-time. Shasta Supercomputer

Cray’s new supercomputer, code-named Shasta, is an entirely new design and will underpin the next era of supercomputing. The system is characterized by exascale performance capability, new datacentric workloads, and an explosion of processor and accelerator architectures. Shasta incorporates next-generation Cray system software to enable modularity and extensibility, supports unparalleled flexibility in processing choice, and scales seamlessly.
