Cray XC Series Programming and Optimization

This Cray OnLine Training (COLT) course is intended for people who work in applications support or development of Cray XC Series computer systems. It familiarizes students with the hardware and software architecture, Cray’s performance analysis tools, and optimization of user codes.

Delivery Options:

This course is a Self-Directed Learning (SDL) web based package.  Students will have access to the course for 90 days. This course should take 15 – 20 hours to complete.

Prerequisites:

  • Experience with Linux shells and commands such as ls, grep, and man. Working knowledge of C, C++, or Fortran programming language and the ability to write, compile, and execute programs on a Linux system.

  • Previous experience with at least one parallel programming style (e.g. Open MPI) and one multiprocessor computer architecture is advantageous.

Course Modules:

The program is divided into two parts.

  • Part One of CPO is porting codes, which includes Learning Modules 1 - 3. Porting includes steps and tools needed to get an application running correctly on a Cray XC Series system. Modules included are:

     

    • Module 1: Cray XC Architecture Overview

    • Module 2: Cray XC Series Software overview

    • Module 3: Porting codes

       

  • Part Two of CPO is introductory optimization, which includes Learning Modules 4- 8. This includes procedures and tools needed to measure performance and implement tactical code optimizations using Intel Xeon processors on XC Series systems. Code optimization is an extensive topic. This introductory course provides just a sample of optimization techniques but includes references to further on-line documentation from Cray. Modules included are:

     

    • Module 4: Introduction to optimization and CrayPat

    • Module 5: MPI and Optimization of local compute

    • Module 6: Case study for optimization

    • Module 7: Optimizations: Cray Scientific Library overview

    • Module 8 Optimizations: I/O on the Cray XC Series systems
